The Malta National Airport (MLA) is actually the only airport in the country of Malta, and as such it services the entire area of the Maltese Archipelago. Centrally located between the cities of Luqa and Gudja, it was completely renovated and refurbished in 1992. Having taking the location of RAF Luqa, the locals still refer to it as either the Luqa Airport or the Valletta Airport, namely because it is about eight kilometres from Valletta, which is Malta’s capital city. The Malta International Airport is also the main hub for Air Malta, with which passengers can get the lowest airfares, not to mention last minute flights, to domestic locations and international destinations, such as Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Brussels, Cairo – but only seasonally – Dublin, Exeter, Prague, Marseille, Milan, Naples, Oslo, and St. Petersburg, among a great many other destinations. The public limited company Malta International Airport plc operates the airport; it hosts the Area Control Centre as well. The Malta International Airport itself hosts the Malta Airshow, a yearly event which is popular among both members of the military and civilian aircraft operators from countries all over Europe. Currently, the Malta International Airport is working on an expansion concerning their departures service, which is set to be completed sometime this year. In addition to expanded departures, improvements include a brand new VIP lounge, as well as the integration of more shops and stores. No doubt these improvements will increase the airport’s reputation for offering the lowest airfares on last minute flights. The Malta International Airport provides car parks for both long term and short term parking. There are several car hire companies operating out of the airport, and bus and taxi service runs regularly, right out of the airport. Other facilities offered by the Malta International Airport include banks, money changing services, a post office, and wireless internet capabilities, as well as restaurants, cafes, and several shopping facilities.
