Zakynthos is part of Greece and is one of the islands in the Ionian Sea. It the third largest island of that area and the name originated from Mycenaean or Pelasgian. Zakynthos has been through a number of severe earthquakes which has destroyed numerous important buildings and has affected its tourism-prioritized economy. It has gone through different settlements by the Romans, Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, French and English before arriving at the final Zakynthos of today. Scuba diving, beaches, old and historical buildings, ruins of previous settlements and religious buildings are among the popular activities for visitors. As an island that heavily promoting its tourism, there is bound to be an international airport that allows visitors from other parts of the world. Dionysisos Solomos is the international airport of Zakynthos, located 4km from the town. There are regular flights from the Athens International Airport by Olympic Airways. Apart from that there are chartered flights from airports in Europe on scheduled basis. Tourists would have to rely on taxi services if they are on free-and-easy package because there is no public transport that connects the airport with the town. Flights to Zakynthos from Athens and back are available on daily basis. Although chartered air flights from Europe are not as often as this, tourists can take a flight to Athens and change the flight to Zakynthos from there. Even those who cannot get on direct flights from Europe can switch to Olympic Airlines in Athens in order to get to Zakynthos.
