Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous community of Spain composed of several islands. Palma is the largest of Mallorca’s harbors, with a total population of a little over 383,000 in the urban area, and a total of 517,000 if counting the surrounding suburban areas. Almost one half of the population of Mallorca lives in Palma. The major airport in the island is Son Sant Joan (PMI) or Palma Airport, which is situated just about 8kms to the east of the city of Palma de Mallorca. This airport has one of the highest volumes of passenger traffic in Spain, higher than even Madrid or Barcelona when it comes to international flights. This is due mainly to the many European and American tourists that arrive in Palma during the summer season. When it comes to domestic traffic, the airport takes only the third place for its annual volume of passenger traffic. Some countries in particular bring the most traffic into Palma, including Britain and Germany. Lots of tourists from other parts of Spain also make their way here during spring and summer. There is an obvious advantage airport’s customers get during high season: numerous airline flights to and from the city offer special summer airfares. Airline companies try to attract people to book and buy flights to different destinations within the island by offering lower prices. Over two million passengers take on those offers and arrive in Mallorca every year. Airline flights to this city are easily available from most of the largest UK Airports, as well as from most major European cities. Those arriving to Mallorca from overseas may have a harder time finding airline flights directly into the island. Transatlantic flights often make their way into Madrid or Barcelona first, but you should be able to get a good deal on a local ticket as long as you book it well in advance.
