About 30 km east of Torrevieja and about 75 km north of Alicante lies Murcia, the capital of the Spanish province of the same name. Its population reached 300,000 residents in 2007, when the last census was conducted. The city is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and cut in half by the Segura River, and it boasts some of the most impressive beaches in the region. Add to that the diversified ecological landscape plus the mild climate and the clear skies with almost no precipitation all year long, and you get the perfect conditions that a great number of tourists dream about when booking an airfare to Murcia. Murcia offers a great number of interesting places to visit. Founded by Arabs in A.D. 825, the city eventually developed a mix of traditions that now include the Cathedral de Santa Maria (finished in the 15th century), the castle of Monteagudo, Malecon Garden, Baroque Cathedral, the University of Murcia, the Museum Ramon Gaya, the Market de Veronicas and Almudi Palace. Murcia Airport (MJV) is used by both military and civilian aircraft, a unique feature shared by very few airports in the world. To make operations easier, the airport is not available for civil flights during the first half of day, but normally operates all weekend. The reduced number of hours can make it difficult to find low airfares to Murcia. The lowest airfares are usually those reaching the most popular destinations, such as the UK, France or Germany. The airport itself offers its customers discount airfares both to and from Murcia, but a number of special low cost airlines also reach Murcia. Jet2, BmiBaby, Easyjey and Ryanair all offer the lowest airfares available in the market. Because of heavy traffic and competition, services to Murcia have been improving year after year. The same is true of local services, such as airport parking, which used to be one of the major problems Murcia Airport faced.
