Domodedovo International Airport (DME) is an international airport located 35km form Moscow city. It is one of the major airports along with the Sheremetyevo International Airport and Vnukovo Airport and largest in terms of passengers in Russia. With 18.76 million passengers using the airport only in 2007 makes it the busiest airport in whole of Europe. Services from Domodedovo began in March 1964 with a flight to Sverdlovsk using a Tupolev 104. The airport, intended to handle the growth of long-distance domestic traffic in the USSR, was officially opened in May 1965. A second runway, parallel to the existing one, was put into service 18 months after the opening of the airport. Catering mainly to European and other regional passengers this airport has arrangement for last minute travel as counter for various low cost airlines and air travel agents are situated within the airport and cheap plane tickets are available on demand. Considering the passenger influx and increase in number of air travel the airport is scheduled for a major expansion shortly which will equip it to handle larger number of passengers from all over the world. The first phase of expansion is due to be completed by the end of 2006 and will allow an extra capacity of 7 million passengers per year with more budget plane ticket. This will then be followed by a phase two expansion which will increase the overall size of the passenger terminal to over 20 million. This is scheduled for completion by 2012.
