Horsens is located at the end of the Horsens fjord and lies in the eastern part of the Jutland peninsula. Aarhus is about fifty kilometres away to the south of Horsens; to the north, Vejle lies about thirty kilometres away; and Horsens is about two hundred kilometres away from the city of Copenhagen. Its close proximity to these three cities allows Horsens residents – not to mention people flying in and out of the city – their choice of airports. The convenient closeness of some of Denmark’s major airports, plenty of airport parking, and the opportunity for low cost flights are all very positive, as Horsens is becoming a large tourist and vacation destination. There is an annual European Medieval Festival in Horsens takes place during the last Friday and Saturday at the end of every August. The centre of Horsens and the town proper is turned into a huge, fantastical medieval market place, the biggest in all of Northern Europe, and tons of activities and entertainment take place. The city of Horsens also puts on a special Crime Festival every year during March. The festival is a celebration of literature – crime novels, mystery novels, and psychological and criminal thrillers. Famous writers of those genres come every year to participate in the Crime Festival. In addition to that, a lot of well known artists and performers have given or are planning to give concerts in Horsens. Some of these performers include Elton John, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, R.E.M., Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, and Madonna. All of these things are turning Horsens into a huge vacation capital for that part of Denmark. The results are an abundance of low cost flights and plentiful airport parking at the many airports located in close proximity to Horsens, whether at the Copenhagen Airport or the closer Aarhus Airport.
