Aalborg Airport (AAL), in Nørresundby, Denmark, is a small international airport that doubles as a military airport. It is an excellent way to travel to Aalborg, the fourth-largest city in Denmark and home of the wild “Carnival in Aalborg.” Because Aalborg Airport is small, the services it offers are simple compared with other international airports: a restaurant, a duty-free shop, a lounge, meeting rooms, and a cash dispenser. It also has offices for car rental agencies. However, transportation to and from the city of Aalborg, 6.5 km (4 miles) away, is quick and convenient. Buses run every 15 to 30 minutes, and taxis, minicabs, and even limousines are available for rental. Aalborg Airport offers flights to and from locations in Norway, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, England, and Spain, and recently started flights to France. Airfare rates are relatively high, so if you plan to take an air flight to Aalborg, check rates frequently, look for deals, and be willing to take multiple flights or to be flexible about when you travel. At the top of the list, of course, is the spring Carnival, when bands from across Europe come to compete and both bands and residents dress in costumes as elaborate as any seen in Rio's Carnival.
